Aestheticism was a late nineteenth-century movement that placed beauty at the centre of human experience, and Oscar Wilde became its most brilliant and provocative voice in English literature.

Aestheticism developed in Britain between the 1860s and the 1890s as a reaction against Victorian utilitarianism, industrial ugliness and moralistic art. Writers and painters such as Walter Pater, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and James Whistler began to argue that art should not teach lessons or serve social purposes. Their famous formula, "art for art's sake" (a translation of the French l'art pour l'art), claimed that a poem or a painting is valuable in itself, not because it improves the reader morally. In Studies in the History of the Renaissance (1873) Pater invited his readers to "burn always with a hard, gemlike flame", that is, to live each moment with intense aesthetic perception. This philosophy attracted young intellectuals who felt suffocated by middle-class respectability and by the dominant idea that literature had to be useful. Oscar Wilde, born in Dublin in 1854 and educated at Oxford under Pater's influence, absorbed these ideas and transformed them into a complete style of life, dress and conversation.

The Aesthetic Movement: principles and style

The core principle of the movement is the autonomy of art: a work of art obeys only its own internal laws of harmony, colour and rhythm. From this idea derive several recognisable features that you must be able to identify in a text. First, the cult of beauty as the supreme value, often associated with refined, exotic or decadent objects such as peacock feathers, oriental fabrics and rare flowers. Second, the figure of the dandy, an elegant young man who treats his own existence as a work of art and uses paradox and wit to shock conventional society. Third, a deliberately rich and musical prose, full of sensuous adjectives, classical allusions and synaesthesia, where colours seem to have a sound and perfumes a colour. Finally, the rejection of any didactic intention: the artist is not a moralist but a creator of pleasure, and the critic is, as Wilde said, an artist himself.

Oscar Wilde and The Picture of Dorian Gray

Wilde's only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890–1891), is the most complete narrative expression of Aestheticism and, at the same time, its critical questioning. The young Dorian, painted by Basil Hallward and corrupted by the hedonistic theories of Lord Henry Wotton, wishes that his portrait might age in his place; his wish is mysteriously granted. While Dorian remains physically perfect, the canvas records every sin, every cruelty and every act of moral decay. The famous Preface, added in 1891, contains aphorisms that summarise the aesthetic creed, such as "There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all." Yet the plot itself shows the tragic consequences of a life devoted only to sensation: Dorian destroys Sibyl Vane, kills Basil and finally stabs the portrait, dying horribly. The novel therefore works as both a manifesto and a warning, an ambiguity that students must learn to recognise. Wilde also explored similar tensions in his society comedies, especially The Importance of Being Earnest (1895), where wit and paradox dismantle Victorian hypocrisy.

Ricorda
